Deformation-induced Japan twinning in quartz during incipient mylonitization

چکیده
Many crystalline rocks of the continental crust contain coarse-grained quartz as a main mineral (e.g., granitoids). Incipient deformation coarse quartz, which likely controls accumulation bulk strain in heterogeneously deformed crustal rock volumes, commonly develops microshear zones (MSZs) localized recrystallization. At mid-crustal conditions, where is mostly accomplished by subgrain rotation recrystallization, grains MSZs can show an abrupt change crystallographic orientation (large misorientation angle) with respect to host that still not fully understood. We analyzed (20–200 μm thick) from (millimeter grain size) veins Austroalpine Schobergruppe (Eastern Alps). Electron backscatter diffraction analysis reveals are characterized nearly 90° angle between c-axes and new grains, also share one {m} {1122} pole, compatible Japan twinning. This switch c-axis promote geometrical softening shear localization. So far, twinning has been interpreted growth feature. deformation-induced including Dauphiné twinning, play important role initiation crystal-plastic within crust.

Shear-Induced Homogeneous Deformation Twinning in FCC
The {111}<11 2 > shear stress-displacement behavior for face-centered cubic (fcc) metals, aluminum and copper, is calculated using empirical potentials proposed by Mishin and by Ercolessi, based on the embedded atom method (EAM), and compared with published ab initio calculations. In copper close agreement is observed in the results given by the Mishin potential for both the ideal shear strengt...
متن کاملDauphiné twinning in polycrystalline quartz
A recently developed crystal based continuum model for twinning and phase transformations is successfully applied to Dauphiné twinning and the α (trigonal) ↔ β (hexagonal) phase transformation in quartz. Both finite element and uniform deformation simulations are performed of quartz polycrystals and several experimentally observed phenomena are qualitatively reproduced. Results are given for me...
متن کاملDauphiné twinning and texture memory in polycrystalline quartz. Part 1: Experimental deformation of novaculite
Mechanical Dauphiné twinning in quartz has been of long-standing interest, both in single crystals and polycrystalline aggregates. This study investigates texture development in fine-grained quartz rock novaculite with no initial texture using compression experiments conducted in the Paterson gas apparatus to explore the influence of stress and temperature. Texture patterns are measured with ti...
متن کاملStrain hardening and heterogeneous deformation during twinning in Hadfield steel
We identify the role of deformation twinning and twin–twin intersections on the strain hardening behavior of Hadfield steel single crystals using strain field measurements. In situ and ex situ strain field measurements resolved at micrometer length scales are obtained using digital image correlation. Ex situ measurements reveal that macroscopic twin-bands, which are composed of a mixture of fin...
متن کاملDeformation twinning in nanocrystalline materials
Nanocrystalline (nc) materials can be defined as solids with grain sizes in the range of 1–100 nm. Contrary to coarse-grained metals, which become more difficult to twin with decreasing grain size, nanocrystalline face-centered-cubic (fcc) metals become easier to twin with decreasing grain size, reaching a maximum twinning probability, and then become more difficult to twin when the grain size ...
